The Mitsui CD-R is a highly specialized write-once blank recordable compact disk that permanently stores any digitized data. It is distinct from other write-once media in its playback compatibility with conventional audio CD and computer CD-ROM players. Once recorded, the Mitsui CD-R becomes a high quality CD-ROM for repeated, unalterable playback equivalent to a mass-produced CD or CD-ROM.
The difference between a CD-R and a CD-ROM lies in the structural layers between the polycarbonate substrate and the protective lacquer surface that both discs possess. In the CD-ROM, Aluminum is used as a reflective layer. The polycarbonate substrate is stamped with information in the form of "pits" and "lands" signals. These signals are then read by a player's low power laser light and converted to data.
The CD-R has grooves stamped in the polycarbonate substrate to guide the laser. An organic dye layer covers the grooves, which, when written upon by the heat of a higher powered laser light from the Writer, will deform to produce the "pits" and "lands" of Information. The quality of the dye in this layer determines the optical characteristics, durability and lifetime of the CD-R. The dye is protected by a non-corrosive, highly reflective thin layer of gold. Once the CD-R is placed in a recorder, the deformations occur and become permanent. Now the CD-R is read like any CD-ROM disk.
The Mitsui CD-R contains a new. protective Data Shield Surface (DSS). This exclusive MTC exterior is designed to better safeguard against abrasions, scratches and peeling that can be caused by repeated use. Tested against Cyanine based CD-Rs. the Phthalocyanine based Mitsui CD~R shows extreme durability, rallability and longevity against heat, humidity and light. Unlike a Cyanine based CD-R. which shows degeneration from continuous exposure to light and heat under Carbon Arc Lamp testing. Mitsui's Phthalocyanine based CD-R remains durable and remarkably stable throughout the entire test exposure time of 180 hours
Mitsui CD-R's projected longevity was tested by employing the Orange Book Standard for Block Error Rate (BLER) set by the industry for CD-Recordable media. The Phthalocyanine coated Mitsui CD-R was subject to 80 degrees Celsius and 85% RH for over 1000 continuous hours the equivalent of more than 100 years under normal use. The Mitsui CD-R was consistently able to retain data and outperform the Orange Book Standard. Both the new Data Shield Surface and Patented Dye demonstrated overwhelming evidence of Mitsui's durability, reliability and longevity This documentation led Mitsui Tostsu Chemicals to provide their Mitsui CD-R with a three-year warranty - the longest warranty offered on the CD-R market today!
Because MITSUI TOATSU is a chemical company, it has total control of the raw materials that go into the production of the CD-R media. The dye that is the major characteristic of the CD-R is made by a fine organic synthesis process. The polycarbonate substrate that has the laser light guides stamped in are made by a precise injection molding process. The techniques of SPIN COATING to insure a very thin but even coating of the dye, and GOLD SPUTTERING to make the very thin layer of GOLD, has also been perfected by their technicians.
