In our continuing efforts to improve data protection services we believe the recent implementation of ISDN, and some very competetive pricing have made remote backup, with a high speed connection more cost effective, by leveraging your investment in telecommunications.
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is defined by a set of international digital communication standards that are accepted worldwide by communications carriers.
ISDN technology is used to send voice and data (including video, graphics, and sound) in digital signals over communications lines in the public switched network. This technology includes the standard digital transmission protocols, adapters, and communication lines used. It also includes the switching devices and their interfaces, which create three distinct logical data paths, on the standard twisted-pair telephone lines.
ISDN protocols are defined by the Telecommunications Standards Bureau (formerly the Consultative Committee for International Telephone & Telegraph, or CCITT), of the International Telecommunications Union, or ITU. ITU-T is the acronym that represents these protocol standards.
Two types of ISDN user interfaces exist. The Basic Rate Interface (BRI), and the much greater bandwidth Primary Rate Interface (PRI); each of these interfaces enables the line to carry a different number of channels
How fast is Basic Rate Interface compared to your V.34 modem? Depending on the Internet service provider, ISDN/IP connections can be made at 64 kbps or 128 kbps. That's over four times faster than the fastest modems.
Two types of channels are: bearer (B) channels, which "bear" the data, and signaling data (D) channels, which carry instructions and are coupled with the B channels.
Specifically, each ISDN line with a BRI interface has the capacity, through its switching device and user interfaces, for three channels for transmission, two B channels, which can carry 64 Kbps of data, and a D channel, which allows transmission of 16 Kbps of data
Each ISDN line with a PRI interface has the capacity for 23-64 Kbps B channels and one 64 Kbps D channel; these are typically used for data transmission through a North American Standard T-1 trunk.
Equipment requirements vary depending on your application. Besides the ISDN service provided by your telephone company, you will need a terminal adapter (TA) or another ISDN access device such as the NetBlazer LS multiprotocol router that integrates the TA function. In a similar fashion to modems, the TA prepares the data for use with your workstation or network by interfacing non-ISDN equipment to ISDN protocols.
You will also need an ISDN network termination device (NT1), which safely terminates the connection to the BRI or PRI line provided by the telephone company. The NT-1 is sometimes integrated with the TA. Both the TA and the NT1 require a power supply for the ISDN line. Some terminal adapters have the NT-1 intergated.
DataSure offers ZyXEL's Elite 2864I ISDN compatible modems, and integrated NT-1, to minimize capital costs. Also included voice digitization with speech compression, DES, MNP 5, V.42bis, and more. Currently available from Cisco Systems , an Ethernet / ISDN router with BRI, Telebit's Netblazer LS, and Ascend's Pipeline 50, and Gandalf's Lanline 5242.
BRI rates are generally equivalent to existing business rates for equivalent analog communication services. Discounts for quantity and/or contract terms of one to five years are available.
All BRI calls -- data and voice -- are billed in the same way as regular voice calls: there is no extra charge for local calls and long distance rates apply when you dial outside of your local free calling area. Toll discount plans can also be applied.
The chart below gives an example of BRI service rates for 2 B service. Rates will vary with the size of the calling area, the number of lines and the length of the service contract.
